Hi 👋
I'm Karen Lopez, an educator with a heart for empowering every student. My career in math education is driven by a simple yet profound belief: everyone can and should have access to quality math education. This belief fuels my passion for making STEM subjects approachable and engaging, especially for students in marginalized communities. Teaching, for me, is not just a profession; it's a mission to unlock every student's potential.
My +20 year-long career in education is anchored in both academic rigor and a personal commitment to lifelong learning. Currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction at Northern Illinois University, I also hold an M.S. in Mathematics Education and a B.S. in Mathematics with a minor in Education. My certifications in Secondary Mathematics, General and Physical Science, and General Administration K-12, alongside ongoing ESL endorsement studies, reflect my dedication to being the best resource for my students and colleagues.
The core of my work lies in creating spaces where students feel supported and challenged. Whether leading a team of over 30 teachers to enhance STEM instruction or tailoring interventions for struggling students, my focus is always on fostering a learning environment where everyone believes they can excel in math. Recognitions like the Golden Apple Teacher of Distinction and the Illinois Governor's Appreciation Award are affirmations of this impact, but the real reward is seeing the light of understanding and confidence in my students' eyes.
